Established in 1985, Fablevision is located in the cultural industries sector offering apprenticeship-style learning opportunities to mainly (but not exclusively) long-term unemployed 16-25 year olds.
Learners bring their own skills and gain new ones through training and work experience delivered “on the job” in real-life cultural community projects. The projects / commissions / collaborations /partnership projects the charity creates are the “curriculum” for the learners, covering all aspects of creative industry skills. The mentors and guides are the staff and creative practitioners employed by our trading arm, Fablevision Studios
Fablevision Studios Ltd is a cultural social enterprise. It delivers training, film and event management services for the charity but it is set up to seek external/commercial video and multi-media contracts, and to deliver multi-media training/work experience for long term unemployed young people on live commercial contracts.
Fablevision Studios is a progression route for learners – during recent “Community Jobs Fund” contracts, 20 people went on to further education, freelance working or full-time employment. Two have set up their own companies. Having completed their programme, learners then join the pool of free lance creatives and deliver free lance contracts for the company – in turn, cascade training new learners on the job.
All profits from Fablevision Studios Ltd are channelled back to the parent charity to help sustain its charitable work.
Fablevision’s approach to learning for young trainees.
Fablevision is an SQA accredited training centre.
The approach that Fablevision takes to learning is in line with curriculum for excellence guidelines, i.e. it starts from where the individual is – draws out their existing skills, talents and abilities (encouraging them to distinguish what they are) and encourages to learn new ones.
Taught skills include filming, editing, graphic design, drama workshops, administration, visual arts work, event planning and management, communication, team working and inter-personal skills. These underpin every aspect of the learning.
Learning always happens “hands on” on real live contracts (in studios) or projects for delivery within the Charity. The learning experience is an apprenticeship one with mentoring and support mechanisms built in (induction, line management, regular reviews of progress etc).
